What is a Myth?
Mythology students will discuss familiar mythology. This class is a fun and exciting class for students to use their knowledge. Students will relate mythology experiences through movies, books, or lessons they have learned.
Students will respond to questions asked Throughout the week. Students will watch a recorded video lesson and answer questions. Students will ask questions and create projects related to each weekly lesson. Students will Use their Imaginations and Creativity, as well as Learn about Mythology and history. Previous knowledge about Myths is not necessary as we will cover what myths are and what is represented in a myth during the first and second week of class.
As we go week by week, we will be reviewing myths could any part of the legend be real? Students will discuss if they have ever noticed similarities to myths and other stories. Students will create a book, with a moral theme using the myths we explain throughout the first five weeks. Students will create a video of a fable or folktale. Students will be given a choice board to help them decide what type of Video to create.
Week 5 students will create one final project. It can be an addition to their book, a song, poem, or video play to recreate their favorite myth.
We will play games throughout each week; video assignments will be shared with the class and ongoing class discussions. This class is interactive and fun for students to learn about mythology and explore science, social studies, and literature. Students will also let their creativity show.
Week 1:
Students will watch a video explaining what a Myth is.
Students will read about The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The Legends of Sleepy Hollow-The Headless Horseman's Story is a fun writing project. Students write from the headless horseman himself. They'll retell the chase with Ichabod but have creative freedom beyond that. They may even decide if the horseman is a ghost or is Brom Bones playing a prank (both possible from the text.)
Students will share their stories throughout the week. We will have an ongoing class discussion.
Week 2: What are Constellations? We will discuss the myths of the constellations in great detail. Students will watch a PowerPoint of different constellations and make, create, two constellations and write a story about the constellations. Students will share images of their constellations along with their stories throughout the week. We will have an ongoing class discussion.
Week 3: Persephone-This week, we will be discussing the different seasons, the mythology of the different seasons, the science behind having distinct seasons, and agriculture. Jack and the Bean Stalk will even tie into this week.
Week 4: The Myth of Hercules-Hercules was one of the most significant mythological characters in history. Students will watch Hercules' myth and watch the Disney movie of Hercules if they have access to Disney +students who can complete the lesson if they are unable to attend the Video.
Week 5: 12 Labors of Hercules: The Twelve Labors: Twelve Years and Twelve Tests
King Eurystheus of Tiryns gave Hercules twelve labors, or huge tasks, that were meant to test his strength and prove he was a hero. He was given twelve years to complete them. We will discuss all 12 Labors of Hercules and students will create a 12-month calendar using the 12 Labors
